Introduction

Beginning with the year 2003 the Centre of Excellence in Plant Agrobiology and Molecular Genetics PAGEN starts its activities which are foreseen for three years. The Centre is supported by the funds from UE Fifth Framework Programme and was created by scientists from the Institute of Plant Genetics in Poznań. The Institute will also host the Centre for the following three years.

The field of research performed at PAGEN is closely related to the tasks of the EU projects within 5th Framework Programme, Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources. The main objective of the PAGEN Centre is to improve the quality of research through closer co-operation with the EU leading scientific institutions. It will enable a flow of expertise from advanced EU teams to experienced scientists and young researchers in Poland and increase Polish research potential, particularly in the light of the future Union membership. Moreover, the Centre will closely cooperate with end-users, including breeders, representatives of government and local organisations to help in working out the directions of agricultural policy.

Milestones and expected results of the PAGEN Centre

  1. Theoretical and practical training of numerous young scientists and Ph.D. students in the current aspects of molecular plant genetics - establishing the leading training centre for Eastern Europe.
  2. Creation of international network in agricultural sciences and tight bounds with twin EU laboratories.
  3. Entering into close co-operation with end-users from state-owned and private companies. Establishing the platform of discussion for scientists, government officials and regional representatives responsible for the adjustment of Polish agriculture to the Common Agricultural Policy of the EU.
